Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) qualification is the new course which has replaced the old A12 and D3233 assessor qualification.

This qualification is intended for those who assess both occupational competence in vocational skills and knowledge and understanding within the work environment.

The purpose is to train assessors to attain competence in the current assessment standards. These are the qualifications that will equip a wide range of assessors, trainers, facilitators and teachers to support learners.

This qualification is ideal for students who would like to be fully qualified assessors for learners in either the classroom and/or the work environment.

What You Will Learn

Unit 1: Understanding the Principles and Practice of Assessment.

This first unit will involve you gaining the background knowledge in assessment. This will be achieved by attendance of 3x three hour sessions comprising presentations, discussions and exercises in a group learning situation.

You can then choose from one or both of the following units, these depend on your own work environment.

Unit 2: Assessing Competence in the Work Environment & Unit 3: Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement

These last two units will be assessed in the workplace at times that have been agreed with your assessor. You will agree an action plan with your assessor to determine what evidence you will submit and this will include observations of your own assessment in action.

Level 3 Award in Education and Training

Following an LSIS review of qualifications for teachers and trainers in the further education and skills sector in 2012, this qualification replaces PTLLS. The Award in Education and Training is a short course designed to enable a wide range of students to undertake teaching, training or learning tasks relevant to their own training or teaching situation. It is recommended for all teachers new to the sector whether in further education, adult and community learning, work-based learning or other parts of the learning and skills sector.

The award is suitable for those who work, or intend to work, as:

  • Teachers in adult and community education
  • Teachers or trainers in the voluntary sector
  • Training personnel in commerce, industry, the public sector or HM Forces
  • Technicians and support staff in further and adult education

What You Will Learn:

The award is designed to develop the candidates' ability to:

  • Identify students' needs, backgrounds and aspirations
  • Define basic principles of teaching and learning in relation to teaching/training
  • Demonstrate in their planning, delivery and evaluation a regard for equal opportunities and health and safety legislation
  • Develop their skills in devising programmes and schemes of work
  • Adopt a systematic approach to planning learning sessions by reference to a variety of methods, and to develop innovation in their teaching/training
  • Design, make and use a range of teaching and learning materials, using their own creative and information technology skills
  • Develop their key skills
  • Apply communication skills in teaching and training
  • Design and apply appropriate means of assessing their own learners

Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice

This qualification is intended for practitioners who lead the internal quality assurance process within a centre/organisation and have a responsibility for managing the quality of the assessment process, practice and the performance of assessors. They may also develop systems and lead on visits from outside agencies such as awarding organisations.

What You Will Learn:

Unit 1:  Understanding the Principles and practices of internally assuring the quality of assessment

Unit 2:  Internally assure the quality of assessment

Unit 3:  Plan, allocate and monitor work in own area of responsibility

On completion of this course, candidates will be able to:

This qualification provides the knowledge and skills required to progress to employment as lead internal verifier. With experience you will be able to further your career in by undertaking a qualification to enable you to carry out the role of an external verifier.

Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice

This qualification is intended for anyone who is working in, or looking to gain entry to roles in Internal Quality Assurance (IQA). The units will give you the opportunity to develop and improve practice as well as achieving a professional qualification.

The Award is suitable for those who:

  • Work in a training/assessing and quality checking environment.
  • Hold an assessor award (TAQA/A1/D32/D33).
  • Hold a relevant qualification to the specific subject that they wish to IV.

What You Will Learn:

Unit 1 – Understanding the Principles and practices of internally assuring the quality of assessment

Unit 2 – Internally assure the quality of assessment

On completion of this course, candidates will be able to:

  • Explain the process of registration through to the completion of an NVQ and the role of the internal quality assurer.
  • Set up and maintain procedures to meet Awarding Body requirements
  • Verify QCF Assessments
  • Build a portfolio of evidence which meets IQA national standards
